The Scotts Arms, dates back to the early 18th century,
when it was built as part of the reconstruction of the village,
following a devastating fire of 1685.
The Scott family were the principle land owners in the area
living at Woodhall, the home of Lord Sicklinghall.
Woodhall, being the family`s ancesteral home
dating back to the medieval times.
The family built the inn not only to make money
but as a service to the village.
The family moto,`non invita minerva` which means,`
do not envy my wisdom` this may seem a little pompous today
but no doubt the villagers certainly
agreed with the wisdom of building the new inn! In the 19th century,
it became fashionable to take carriage drives via Harewood bridge,
Wetherby and Harrogate, the Scotts Arms
was a favourite stopping place for refreshment.
The Scotts Arms staff know all about the history of the pub having had several instances when they have felt they are not alone…. There have been sightings of a little girl playing around the place, an old man, mysterious noises and furniture falling over so come and see for yourself….if you dare….
